Many women experience heavy, or irregular periods without realizing that these conditions are quite treatable. There’s no reason to live with them because today’s advanced treatments are typically fast and easy. Any unexpected bleeding other than a normal menstrual period or an abnormally heavy period can be alarming. Menstrual irregularities, painful periods, heavy periods, absent periods, or premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are especially common among teens. The normal menstrual cycle involves a complex series of hormonal events. Without fertilization, the lining of the uterus is shed each month. The shed lining causes menstrual bleeding. A normal cycle is from 21 to 35 days. The period generally lasts from two to seven days and has a typical volume of blood and fluid loss from two to eight tablespoons. This equals up to eight soaked pads per day with an average of about two days of heavy bleeding.

Uterine fibroids among many causes

There are hundreds of possible causes for excessive vaginal bleeding. Fibroids are just one of them. Fibroids are usually noncancerous tumors that grow on the uterus. They may or may not cause symptoms. Fibroid symptoms may include painful or heavy periods, depending on fibroid size and location. Dr. Miller treats bothersome fibroids with a medical or surgical approach after discussing what is best for each patient.

Endometrial ablation is an effective treatment

Although most cases of abnormal bleeding among young women are treated medically, endometrial ablation is another option. This quick, no-incision outpatient procedure destroys the inner lining of the uterus – and can eliminate most heavy-bleeding problems. Recovery is quick, and you can return to work the next day or so. This treatment is only for women who have completed their childbearing years.
