Infertility

What is infertility?

Infertility is common, affecting one in eight couples by one estimate. Infertility is due to multiple factors, with statistics suggesting 40% of infertility is female-related, 40% is caused by malefactors, and 20% is from an unknown cause.

Healthy couples in their 20s to early 30s have a 25–30% chance of conceiving in any single menstrual cycle. By age 40, a woman has less than a 10% chance of conceiving per cycle. A man’s fertility also declines with age, but not as predictably as a woman’s.

What causes fertility problems?

The most common reason for female infertility is irregular ovulation or a lack of ovulation. Releasing an egg is vital for unassisted conception to occur. Male infertility is usually due to problems with the health of sperm or low sperm count.

Other causes of infertility include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Uterine anomalies
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Problems with the thyroid or pituitary glands

Scarring or blockages of the fallopian tubes also makes it more difficult to conceive.

When should I see a doctor about infertility?

Consider having an infertility evaluation under these circumstances:

  • You have an irregular menstrual cycle.
  • You haven’t gotten pregnant after a year of having regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • You’re over age 35 years and haven’t conceived after trying for six months.
  • You’re over age 40 and haven’t gotten pregnant within six months of trying.

It’s also best to seek professional assistance from Dr. Miller if you or your partner have a known fertility problem. She provides you and your partner with compassionate and skilled infertility care.

She educates you about your reproductive health and provides an initial evaluation. She recommends appropriate infertility tests to determine the cause of infertility and suggest appropriate treatment.

How is infertility treated?

Dr. Miller guides you through your treatment options based on the results of your infertility evaluation. She provides the support you need as you navigate this emotionally tasking decision.

If you need advanced treatment, she may refer you to an expert colleague and stay involved with you throughout your care.

Regardless of the cause, Dr. Miller will help you address your fertility issues according to your situation — even if that's alternative methods to reach your family goals.
